The Traditional game of engklek
is also called sunda manda which has been believed having its real name from
Dutch as ‘Zondag Maandag’. Based on its history, the game was brought by Dutch
in to Indonesia
when they made colony in the past. It is believed in that the game was brought
in to Indonesia
by the Dutch .
Though nowadays there is no
authentic evidence that is able to conclude about the history of the traditional
game of engklek. However in World War II this game was very popular for girls
in Europe. While in Indonesia, the dutch girls played
the game in colonial era. Indeed the game was mostly played by girls, though,
in fact boys also played the game.
After Indonesia
gained the independency from colonialism, the game remained in Indonesia and became increasingly known by
children in Indonesia.
As well as its spread, as the time goes by the game become popular and spread
to all over the country. At last, there are no children who do not know about
the game.
Player in The Traditional Game of Engklek
The game is always played by
girls age of eight to ten years old. It is very rare that the game is done by
boys or teenager. Probably because the game is more identical with girls.
The game can be played by a
child or more, but it can be played also in team. If it is played in team,
commonly there are two teams consist of some children.
